Richard Gerstl

"Inspiration - Legacy"

The painter, who died young (1883-1908), left behind 60 paintings and few drawings. In 1906 Gerstl met the admired Arnold Schönberg. The connection, however, came to a bad end when the composer caught the house friend with his wife Mathilde in flagrante. Gerstl subsequently committed suicide. The painter confronts us in a messianic manner in his "Self Portrait as a Semi-nude", in which he presents himself bald with a hip cloth and aura. In his later paintings, the blurred faces of the figures, which the Van Gogh fan painted with strong colours, captivate the viewer.
