The show presents the "avant-garde in the night cafe", i.e. in artists' bars, cabarets and clubs from 1880 to 1960, and, arranged by city, the journey leads from the original Parisian artists' cafe Le Chat Noir to the Nigerian artists' club Mbari. A collaborative, playful form of design that combined the visual arts with design, dance, theatre, poetry and music was the order of the day there. Among the approximately 500 exhibits are paintings and graphics as well as photographs, shadow puppets, masks, furniture and reconstructions of the elaborate decorations of the Viennese cabaret Fledermaus and the club L'Aubette in Strasbourg.
