The travelling exhibition "6 American Artists", on display 2 to 15 Aug. at Galerie Vieceli in Paris’ Marais district, will be shown 6 to 30 Sept. at Assisinarte Gallery in Assisi, Italy. It features 76 works confiscated from American artists while crossing the Serbian border with Bulgaria and Romania in November 2011.
Citing improper documentation, the Serbian authorities confiscated the works in possession of Washington D.C.-based artist David Suter and gallery owner Victor Gaetan, and held them for eight months, as reported in The Washington Post.
After the two men were detained, fined $10,000, and released three days later, U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Mary Warlick worked to secure the release of the 72 paintings and 4 sculptures, which was finally achieved this past 27 July.
In addition to David Suter, the artists concerned include Rosana Azar, Marian Bingham, David Goslin, Judith Judy, and Dee Levinson.
