In Brief: Stage, Nov. 2012
Nov 30, 2012
The public art space and offices of the Jewish Theatre of Austria – The Window – closed on 30 Nov., leaving the theatre without a stage.
Founded by Warren and Sonja Rosenzweig in 1999, it is the first artistic company since 1938 to centre its creative efforts on the interpretation of Jewish identity and its position in Viennese heritage – an important development not only for Austria, but also for all of Europe. It is among the first professional Jewish theatres to open in Western Europe since WWII.
"We live in a cynical era," said artistic director and co-founder Warren Rosenzweig. "A time when the messages of community, transparency, responsibility, memory and courage that are at the core of the work of the Jewish Theatre in Austria are more valuable than ever."
Their last show was on 18 November, Totem and Tabory – The Genesis and Second Coming of the Jewish Theatre of Austria profiling the company’s aims and its political independence.
