On 18 January, the stage of the Schauspielhaus Wien is in American hands: In cooperation with Washington D.C.-based director Gillian Drake, the theatre presents four plays by contemporary, young American authors.

In addition to Ayad Akhtar’s Disgraced, Annie Baker’s The Aliens and Jordan Harrison’s Maple and Vine, read in excerpts, Amy Herzog’s new play 4000 Miles will be performed by the ensemble.

Herzog, currently playwright-in-residence of the Schauspielhaus, was recently honoured with The New York Times’ Outstanding Playwright Award for 2012 for her play After the Revolution. All four artists are among the most popular and frequently performed playwrights in the United States. The texts (in German translation) will be performed as staged readings.

In light of President Barack Obama’s inauguration, the Schauspielhaus aims to offer insight into contemporary American theatre, thus enabling a trans-Atlantic exchange of views and opinions.
