Mary Ellen Mark

Magnum photographer Mary Ellen Mark (1940-2015) portrayed the lives of people on the margins of society from the 1960s onwards. Her pictures of women and girls were taken in the context of the women's rights movement and male-dominated photojournalism. Mark saw herself not only as a witness, but also as an advocate for her female protagonists and often stayed in contact with them for years. Her visual language combined essayistic narration with concise individual shots.
