Carmen

The once-feared director Calixto Bieito showed his 1999 production, which comes across as so anti-cliché that it is, again, boring. Neither between Carmen and Don José nor between Carmen and Escamillo sparks fly; a howling crowd of soldiers, pseudo-insurgent factory workers, cliché-ridden Roma and a criminal gang of smugglers also remain harmless in their overacting. Everything that makes up "Carmen", the dancing and erotic, the military and violent, the aggressive and abysmal, is owed by Bieito. A bloodless and old-looking production.
