During his student years in Vienna, Mahler wrote several chamber music works, including prize-winning pieces such as a violin sonata and two piano quintets. Only the quartet movement for violin, viola, cello and piano by the then sixteen-year-old has survived from these years. Anton Webern's Piano Quintet from 1907 is also a study work - he was a composition student of Arnold Schönberg at the time. Schönberg's String Quartet No. 2 follows on almost seamlessly from the two pieces; the late "Ode to Napoleon" against National Socialist tyranny forms a contrast.
