Helen Mirren in the title role as Kiev-born former Labor and Foreign Minister Golda Meir (1898-1978), who became Israeli Prime Minister in 1969. Her striking appearance and assertiveness made the passionate smoker an icon and - especially with regard to the Yom Kippur War - a not uncontroversial political protagonist. Henry Kissinger, whom she asks for support from the USA, says that he was first an American, then Secretary of State and finally a Jew - that may be true, the Prime Minister replies in the film, but as we know, in Hebrew you read from right to left.
