The Two Popes

© Netflix

A cinematic speculation about what the meeting between Pope Benedict and his successor Pope Francis, this so different pontiff, might have looked like. "The fronts are clearly divided: The Pfaffen battle runs between dogma and reform. Fernando Meirelles stages the dialog-heavy duel as a chamber play and puts the two acting heavyweights Anthony Hopkins (Ratzinger) and Jonathan Pryce (Bergoglio) close to the pellet. The wobbly close-ups suggest intimacy, the thick, papered-up coarse grain of even recent historical photographs suggest authenticity." (David Auer)
