Liebe war es nie

Langbein & Partner
"Liebe war es nie" tells the equally incredible and tragic love story between the young Jewish woman Helena Citron, who was deported to Auschwitz, and the Austrian SS officer Franz Wunsch. Thirty years after the two's lives parted at the gate of the death camp, they find themselves in a Viennese courtroom: Helena as a witness, Franz as the accused. "Maya Sarfaty's direction teases out thrill options, transposing standard 'clandestine romance' motifs into standard Holocaust imagery: some arrest, some train, that serves as the frame of an anomaly apparently more worth telling than detailed aspects of the verdict of that Viennese court that acquits Wunsch in 1972."
