France, early 1960s. Anne is unintentionally pregnant - and thus in a terrible situation. Abortions are illegal: anyone expecting a child is forced into an existence as a mother or completely on their own in the life-threatening attempt of a clandestine abortion. "The Event" by Audrey Diwan, awarded the Golden Lion in Venice, is an adaptation of Annie Ernaux's autobiographical novel of the same name. It takes up the documentary, unsentimental tone of the writer on film. The images of the abortion(s) Anne has to endure are almost unbearable - her pain is almost physically transmitted to the audience. (Sabina Zeithammer)
