Signs of War

In February 2014, photographer Pierre Crom travels to Crimea, Ukraine, on a one-way plane ticket, one day before its annexation by Russia. From then on, he finds himself in the middle of a rapidly escalating conflict and decides to stay: The start of the war in Slovyansk, the downing of the MH17 plane, tank combat in Debaltseve. "'Signs of War' is now both a kind of work-in-progress and a crash course or refresher course in the Crimean War (just as it marks the anniversary of the latest invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops, which briefly enters the picture at the end). What the film shows: The lens is never 'objective' or ',neutral', always directed at a fragmented (sometimes bombed, bruised) reality. The whole image is the untrue." (David Auer)
