In the night rain, So-young lays her newborn unobserved in front of the baby hatch of a church. Unobserved? Behind the box, human traffickers Sang-hyun and Dong-Soo are already waiting, unaware that they themselves are already the focus of the police. When So-young changes her mind and seeks church care for her child, the kidnappers are threatened with exposure. What sounds like a grim social drama becomes a humanistic parable on the construct of family in Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda's first Korean production. (Martin Nguyen)
