Gabriel Carvin (Gérard Depardieu), a star chef from Saumur, is awarded his third Crystal star. That same evening, his wife Louise (Sandrine Bonnaire) leaves him. The sudden separation triggers a family crisis, the hyperactive Gabriel suffers a heart attack and must now live far away from his cooking pots. This healing break will perhaps allow him to find a new passion. To get his mind off things, he travels to Japan, where he revives the simple pleasures of friendship and tries to uncover the secrets of umami, the fifth taste of the palate. (press info)
