The Inspection

Ellis, disowned by his deeply religious mother because of his homosexuality and thrown out on the street, hopes to get closer to her again by training with the U.S. Marines, of all things. Director and writer Elegance Bratton knows what he's talking about. "The Inspection" is based on his personal life story as a homeless, gay recruit. This queer "Full Metal Jacket" follows the usual narrative: Ellis goes through the homophobic hell of beatings and harassment, only the instructor Rosales secretly supports him. Pope is convincing as a sensitive soldier who in the end, as a "real man," finds not only the respect of his comrades, but also his own. (Martin Nguyen)
