In the midst of a future war between humanity and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (John David Washington), a detached former Special Forces agent mourning his missing wife, is recruited to take out a child superweapon. "While director Gareth Edwards makes a visible effort to add new facets to the Pinocchio problem in blockbuster format, and computer intelligence generates terrific special effects, the script, which could have been written by a chatbot, follows the old pattern: a sci-fi fairy tale in which the question of what it means to be human is violently human."
