Fanny and Jean are a happy, wealthy couple with a Parisian apartment that leaves nothing to be desired. Then Fanny meets up with her old school friend Alain, a writer and bohemian who lives in a romantic attic apartment. A tempestuous affair quickly begins, threatening Fanny's marriage and ultimately bringing her crime-obsessed mother onto the scene. "It is the most rounded Allen in a long time, everything interlocks: the vivid camerawork of Vittorio Storaro, who polishes out a Paris in the most beautiful autumn colors; the drawing of the characters, who are more complex than they seem under an ironized surface (very charming, for example, Valérie Lemercier as Fanny's mother, who develops traits of a Miss Marple); the acting, the dialogues.
