Portuguese filmmaker João Canijo is represented in the Viennale 2023 feature program with two works that are complementary to each other and deal with toxic family relationships: "Mal viver" and "Viver mal". The former is about the owners of a formerly shiny hotel in Porto who are struggling with economic pressure. But more than that, the women wrestle with the emotional violence they exert on each other across the generations: The youngest seeks to reconnect with her depressed, hysterical mother after her father's death; grandmother and aunts become entangled in toxic cycles.
