It is the concentration on detail, the loving devotion to the simple things in the quiet everyday life that stand out in Yuji Nakae's film. Convincingly conveying a traditional view of the principle of food, combined with impressive portrayals of its preparation, he brings Tsutomo closer to a difficult character who has chosen loneliness as a way out. He is played by Kenji Sawada, a pop star in 1970s Japan, who can be seen in front of the camera again here after a long break.
