Burgers on the elevated track
Photo: Heribert Corn The Las Vegas of Vienna, the plastic world on Riesenradplatz, the building next to the wax museum. In front of the entrance is a construction made of metal pipes, a miniature model of the technical system, the function of which you immediately witness, two staircases lead up - welcome to the rollercoaster restaurant: a hall, it smells of chips and ketchup, autodrome music, metal rails run across the upper half of the room in winding paths, behind an area screened off by a glass wall, two robotic arms move, placing small, black plastic sledges on the rails so that they then glide to the predetermined tables ... You queue for quite a long time. Not because there are so many people there, but explaining the ordering tablet computer takes a little while, as does paying via the ordering tablet computer, and both at the same time, so you do have some time. During this time, you can watch the spectacle of the rollercoaster restaurant - the sledges whizzing to the tables. It doesn't get much better after that. You are shown to a seat at one of the tables, choose between salads with or without egg, tuna, chicken strips, tagliatelle with or without tuna, chicken strips, various burgers and various breaded dishes on a tablet and send off your order via Bluetooth. The first time, it's not so easy to steer the sled to your seat using the turntable, and even less easy to free the drink, which is held in place with rubber bands, from the plastic trolley, but you learn quickly. The beer is called "One more Beer", has a protected name, is brewed by the Brau-Union and tastes like nothing. Wow, and here comes the small portion of fish & chips in a cruet. Four pieces of deep-fried polar cod on soft industrial fries (€ 6.50), not exactly a highlight, but luckily the lights are just going out and the two robot arms are putting on a disco show. The bored teenagers at the next table look up briefly from their smartphones. Next order: chili cheeseburger and a bottle of red wine, press "Order". The "One more Red" Zweigelt from the Kracher winery, world-famous, but not because of this wine. And oops, soon the menage reindl with the burger and another with even more bland fries. The burger tastes like hot ketchup, luckily there's Disco again (€ 13.95). When asked whether the rather modest selection will become even bigger and more interesting in the future, we are told that pizza doesn't fit into the menage reindl. Rollercoaster will have a hard time against Langos and Schweizerhaus. To sum up: the first branch of a high-tech restaurant concept in which the food is delivered to the customer by sliding rail. And that's the highlight. Rollercoasterrestaurant 2nd, Riesenradpl. 6 Tel. 0660/244 38 23 daily 11.30-23 hDetails
